The International Office conducted a beach cleanup and survey at uninhabited Kabuto Island on December 4 (Sun). This event constituted a field trip for two class (①Plastics, the environment and human society, and ②Japanese Affairs), and the boat trip was financed by a special fund from the university. We coordinated with ‘Kabuto Island Project’, the organization that manages Kabuto Island, which lies offshore Aji Peninsula.
The weather was gloomy with light rain. The total number of participants was 15 people, including ten students, two faculty members, and three members from Kabuto Island Project.
The cleanup was conducted via two teams of five students each. A total of 4672 pieces weighing 71.7 kilograms of marine garbage were collected into 25 bags (45L). Using the classification provided by International Coastal Cleanup, the top five items collected were ①Other plastics/foam packaging (3474 pieces), ②Foam cups & plates (491 pieces), ③Plastic take away containers (321 pieces), ④Foam bits (89 pieces) and ⑤Beverage cans (77 pieces).
