Joint cleanup event with Kyoto Prefecture University of Medicine

Kagawa University (KU) conducted a joint cleanup event with Kyoto Prefecture University of Medicine (KPUM) on 24th April 2022.
The event was the 8th in the series planned and executed by Aji-na Beach Cleanup Committee.
At the same time, the event marked the third occasion whereby we conducted an online exchange session with our partners after the garbage cleanup and survey activities.
Both sides (KU and KPUM) had about 20 or more participants.
The Kyoto side had students from KPUM and from Kyoto University.
Meanwhile, the Kagawa side had nine students (eight international, one Japanese) and some participants from the public.
The cleanup location for Kyoto was Kamogawa River and the university campus.
Kagawa's cleanup site was Kamano Beach, where the KU Marine Station is located.
Light rain fell at Kagawa, while Kyoto conducted the event under heavier rain.
As in previous joint online sessions, both sides met to greet each other before embarking on the cleanup and survey activities.
Both sides then logged onto Zoom to conduct the online exchange.
After opening remarks from KPUM and KU, students from both sides reported on their experiences and impressions.
At Kamogawa River, the vicinity was apparently rather clean as many volunteers conduct cleanup activities on a daily basis.
Yet, the Kyoto team could find some pet bottles, snack wrappers, and so on. They also reported finding bicycles thrown into the river, especially under the bridges.
Kamano Beach was also quite clean, to begin with. The team found many cigarette butts, pet bottles, Styrofoam fragments, and pipes used for oyster farming. A large buoy was also found but could not be transported due to the large size.
Students from both sides reported that the event was meaningful, and we should continue the effort while trying to get more people involved.
A student from Kyoto side made some closing remarks, ending the three-hour event.
