Kotoden bus and train Service

Payment methods for Kotoden Bus and Train Service
  • Cash
  • School IruCa card (orange colour)
    - This card is with student concessions. It can be used for all Kotoden bus and train service.
  • Student pass (tsuugaku-teiki-ken)
    - This pass allows student to take unlimited rides between two specific stations to go to school.
    - You can choose 1-month pass, 3-months pass or 6-months pass.

*1. School IruCa card must be renewed in March that is the last month of academic year in Japan. For renewal, your student ID is required.
*2. Renewal process is not required for student ID with school IruCa function.
*3. To terminate School IruCa card service, visit Kotoden service counter for returning the card. With JPY100 as handling charge, counter will refund the amount left in the card as well as your deposit of JPY500. For this process, your student ID is required.

How to apply for school IruCa card /student pass
  1. Fill in an application form. Form can be downloaded from this link (available only in Japanese).

    If you are applying for a student pass, you need to get the faculty stamped on your application form.
  2. With application form and student ID, visit one of Kotoden service counters. If necessary, you may ask your tutor or Japanese friend to accompany you for communication support.
  3. When you purchase School IruCa card, you need to pay at least JPY 2000 (1500 for minimum top-up value and 500 for deposit). Maximum value allowed on the card is JPY 20000.
  4. To purchase student pass, choose the number of month (1, 3 or 6 months) and two specific train stations you will use to go to campus. You must pay for full amount when purchasing a pass. Please visit this link to check the amount. (available only in Japanese).

  5. Before visiting the Kotoden service counter, you may check your student ID. If it has a small logo of dolphin face, it means that your student ID is already equipped with IruCa card function. You can simply start using your student ID as school IruCa card after putting some value in the card. You do not need to visit service counter for card application.
How to use school IruCa card /student pass
  1. When you get on bus or enter train station, simply tap the card/pass against card reader.
  2. When you alight from bus or exit from train station, tap the card/pass against card reader.
  3. If card reader indicates green light - everything is ok. Alight from bus/exit from station.
    If card reader indicates red light - move the card away from reader. Wait and try tapping the card/pass again. If the red light comes on again, ask driver for help.

How to pay by cash on bus
  1. As you are getting on bus, find a small orange machine at either side of near the entrance door. This machine dispenses a small paper slip and you need to take this slip when you board bus. On the paper, a number is printed. This number tells where you boarded the bus.
  2. Listen carefully to announcement. Press the button once your bus stop of destination is announced.
  3. Just before you arrive at your stop, check fare display board located at the front area of bus and the number typed on your paper slip. The display board shows your fare in red.

  4. Once bus reaches at your stop, move to the front of the bus, and place the exact amount of required fare together with the paper slip into the box. Please note that after payment is made into the box, no change will be given.
  5. If you need to break JPY 1000 bill, JPY 500 coin or JPY 100 coin, you can use the money changer machines while bus waits for traffic light.
